Plumbing Gasfitting Drainlaying Roofing Literacy needs outlined
The ITO has worked with Workbase the NZ Centre for Workforce Literacy Development to produce "Literacy on the job" and " Literacy Profiles" of the literacy and numeracy skills needed for Roofing, plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying. We use the resources when writing learning materials and developing new qualifications. They are also helpful for employers and people interested in working in the industry.
Employers
Use the Literacy on the Job resource with:
- Existing employees considering taking up the training
- Prospective employees/apprentices considering the trade and wanting to know what's involved.
- The Literacy Profiles give a more detailed description of the underpinning skills involved in the job tasks.
Use these to:
- Work with employees to ensure they have or are developing the necessary skills
- Provide a checklist of skills in preparation for more formal learning such as the theory side of an apprenticeship.

Employees
Use the resources to:
- Understand the skills involved in the job
- Identify your own skills and ones you want to develop further.
Schools/Careers Advisers
Use the resources with:
- Students interested in a career in the trades or students in the Gateway programme to plan their learning and make relevant subject choices
- Make links between skills for work and NCEA units and achievement standards.
Tutors
Use the Literacy Profiles to:
- Identify the demands of the qualification
- Identify the skills to look for in students
- Embed the relevant literacy and numeracy skills into your teaching.
