John Barton is Monier Bricks and Roofing New Zealand’s Quality Control Manager.
“I was a fitter and turner then the firm closed and as it turned out Monier were looking for roofing installers. I had my own business as a franchise with Monier eventually selling the business then going on to work with Monier. I have been in the roofing industry for 30 years.
My role involves visiting sites in the Auckland and Waikato area making sure the quality of the product is to the specification of Monier and installation is in-line with Monier. I may advise builders on product particularly if a design is exceptional and may also be called upon to manage disputes between builders and owners.”
With all this on his plate what made John take on studying toward a formal qualification? “I was encouraged to complete the National Certificate in Roofing qualification so I would be able to carry out assessment. I see assessment fitting in well with my current role.
By gaining recognition of your skills I believe this will lift the profile of the industry and attract more people into the roofing industry. People can see that they can gain a formal qualification and the trade is more than just another labouring role.”
