Plumbing

Plumbing and gasfitting are strong career choices. Both trades are in constant demand, and plumbers and gasfitters are rarely out of work.

Earn while you learn

Another bonus is the wages. As an apprentice, you are paid while you learn. Which means you don't have to take out a student loan! You can earn a living while learning on-site and attending block courses - and  still pay the bills!

Your skills travel well

The skills you learn are transferable throughout the world.

Once you have finished your training, you know you have a trade you can use nationally and overseas.

Variety and challenges

The job is varied, working both indoors and outdoors. One day you may be working on a major construction project and the next on a smaller job on a residential property.

Along with new installations, there is plenty of maintenance work in servicing and repairing fittings. You will learn about a range of issues, from health and safety through to customer service and working with other trades – the job is responsible, demanding, social and satisfying.

You can complete National Certificate qualifications in either Plumbing or Gasfitting, or in both.

National Certificate – a goal worth reaching

The National Certificates in Plumbing and Gasfitting take four years to complete, involving both on- and off-job training. The Skills Organisation arranges for plumbing and gasfitting apprentices to attend block courses at:

  • G & H Training in Auckland,
  • Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) in Hamilton,
  • Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec),
  • Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) in Invercargill and
  • Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT).

These courses are part of your studies, and give you the opportunity to demonstrate your on-job skills and discuss ideas and any concerns you might have. Your skills are assessed and you gain credits towards your National Certificate.

Distance learning modules, and on-job assessment, are also part of your plumbing and gasfitting apprenticeship.
