Plumbing and gasfitting is a great career choice. For one thing plumbers and gasfitters are in short supply and rarely out of work. Have you ever tried to get a plumber or gasfitter at short notice? Customers often have to book them in advance. The other bonus is the wages. As an apprentice you are paid while you work. No student loans, and money to buy the things you want!
OE-friendly – your skills travel well
The skills you learn are transferable throughout the world. Once you have finished your training and OE beckons, you know you have a trade you can use overseas, and gain further experience to bring back to New Zealand.
Variety and challenges
The job is varied, working both indoors and outdoors – one day you may be working on a major construction project and the next on a smaller job on a residential property. Along with new installations, there is plenty of maintenance work in servicing and repairing fittings.
You will learn about a range of issues, from health and safety through to customer service and working with other trades – the job is responsible, demanding, social and satisfying.
You can complete National Certificate qualifications in either Plumbing or Gasfitting, or in both.
Seize life with both hands!
In these economically unsure times, there is no more reliable career move than enrolling for a plumbing or gasfitting apprenticeship!

National Certificate – a goal worth reaching
The National Certificate in Plumbing and Gasfitting takes between three and five years to complete, involving both on- and off-job training. The PGDR ITO arranges for plumbing and gasfitting apprentices to attend block courses at
- G & H Training in Auckland,
- Manukau Institute of Technology
- Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec) in Hamilton
- Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec)
- Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT)
- Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) in Invercargill
These courses are part of your studies, and give you the opportunity to demonstrate your on-job skills and discuss ideas and any concerns you might have. Your skills are assessed and you gain credits towards your National Certificate.
Distance learning modules, or on-job assessment, are also part of your plumbing and gasfitting apprenticeship.
