Drainlaying

Within any given drainlaying apprenticeship there are a range of options. You may be working on a large-scale project for a local council, or on smaller jobs on individual commercial or residential properties. An essential part of the job is learning to work well with associated trades.

A career in drainlaying – reliable, diverse outdoor work

A career as a drainlayer offers diversity, challenges and the chance to work in the great outdoors. A drainlayer works as part of a close-knit team and also learns to think for him or herself. The job requires energy, fitness and a strong work ethic. Drainlayers play an essential role in the health of the community – the drains and pipes you work with ensure all Kiwis have pure drinking water on tap and that waste is taken away safely and efficiently. The job is constantly in demand, well paid and rewarding.

 Earn as you learn

As an apprentice drainlayer, you are paid as you learn – you won’t be landed with a student loan to pay back and you can have a reasonable lifestyle as you build your career.

Drainlaying as a Career

Solid trade skills are in demand in other countries

The skills you learn on your paid apprenticeship are transferable throughout the world. When your training is complete, and you are thinking about travelling, you have a solid trade skill you can depend on. Long term, the work experience gained on your travels will benefit the New Zealand industry when you return.

A heavy traffic licence is also a plus for drainlaying apprentices, as this is essential for using larger machinery.

The most important parts of a drainlaying career, however, are taking pride in a job well done, and getting stuck in as part of a team.

National Certificate – taking it to the next level
